Random
So I was thinking today, I’m glad that in this day and age of crappy radio music, there are still groups out there that are still rocking. Listening to some old Kings of Leon today is what sparked this thought in my head. Kings of Leon is a band that just got the recognition they deserved here in America. Yes, their new album is definitely more mainstream for our radio over here in the States, but it’s their old stuff that really got me hooked. Their first album, Youth and Young Manhood, is one of my favorite albums. It’s like at that time, they probably were thinking about how no one really has the soul or feel to rock music. I think it’s something about the southern twang in their music that really appeals to me. They started off getting really popular in England and over in Europe. It makes sense, I feel English and European radio is vastly different then radio here. In my opinion probably a lot better. I used to listen to the radio when I was a kid; I feel I didn’t know much more than that. But now days I can’t even do it. I swear if I hear another new song with the T-pain voice over I might go crazy. All those songs sound the same to me. I feel like I’m constantly asking people who the artist is when I know the song, but it’s always someone different. I don’t know where I’m going with this blog entry, it ended up going in a direction I did not think it was going haha. Anways, yeah, I think this is about 250 words…

Kevin, I agree with you about the choice of music today on the radio. There are not many artists that I enjoy or can bear to listen to. I guess that is why I still admire artists like Bon Jovi and Rob Thomas. They have uniqueness about them that never fades out. They just keep on trying and striving for the best of who they are. I know there are artists out there today which are new and are very talented as well. For instance, I really like Chris Daughtry. I think he has a total unique and deep voice. I almost always have my music on an ipod, because I can’t stand to listen to the radio anymore. I think music here in Tucson stinks. I do not like rap. Sometimes I wonder how I come across any new music at all, because I hardly ever watch television unless it has to do with 24, cars, scifi, or a special appearance by a singer I enjoy. There used to be a really good station here in Tucson, it was 104.1. Then it turned into the only FM radio station in all of Tucson, the Truth. I like to search around for new underground bands on My Last FM. I think that is a good place to listen to new bands or even old ones which aren’t popular. You can modify the genre you are looking for and grab artists that are like the ones you previously enjoy. I’m sure you have heard of it. It’s pretty funny how we just start writing and then randomly realize this isn’t what I was going for. I think it makes it more interesting.
ReplyDeleteWe might be running the risk of confirmation bias, but I (generally) can't stand the radio either. I'm not sure if it's the fact that I'm forced to listen to the radio at work. This means that after ever commercial, I get to hear “To the Left” and/or “Delilah.” It’s gotten to the point that I laugh manically each time I hear them.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, there seems to be a trend to not like what’s on the radio because it’s “popular” or because it’s the “radio.” I’m not saying anyone here is guilty of that (although, I probably as my junior year of high school), but I’ve noticed a lot of Kings of Leon fans jump ship after their latest album. I loved their first albums, and I loved their newest one. Admittedly, they sound very different, but I think songs like “Closer” still contain the soul of their first albums.
I agree that the radio tends to play songs that sound very (VERY) similar. In fact, I hated most rap for a long time since the only thing I knew of rap is what was played on the radio—as a side note, I think they’re eventually going to run out of intelligible metaphors for the female ass (“laffy taffy” was beyond pushing it). But after I’ve spent some time with rap, I’ve actually found plenty of artists I enjoy. This even includes rappers I hear on the radio (although, not usually for what gets played on the radio). The Black Keys new collaboration with rap/hip hop artists, Blakroc, is amazing (including guys like Q-Tip).
